There is a very nice place in Tirana, called “The Funky Moustache”, where they make really nice smoothies and fruit juices. They changed their menu lately and added also peanut butter smoothies. So delicious  it’s something between a smoothie and a dessert, so whenever you want to treat yourself with a sweet delight, enjoy this smoothie.I haven’t asked the guys about the recipe. I just drank my smoothie slowly, and tried to guess the ingredients. I know it would have been easier to ask, but I kind of consider guessing recipes as a riddle, and enjoy the whole process so much.

I don’t know if I am close to the ingredients that they use, but the taste and texture is almost the same. I skipped the flaxseed at the top that they add and replaced with black sesame seeds, which is my obsession for the moment.

As every smoothie it takes a maximum of 5 min to prepare, but will fuel you with nutrition values and energy for hours.

Red wine liquor – tradition at its best

I love learning about traditional recipes and experimenting with them.  They are paths to the past and make me understand and love Albanian culture and culinary even more.

Red wine liquor is one of the recipes I’ve had so much fun with, because, you know, it includes wine.

It’s practically wine, cooked with sugar and cloves which is kept in the fridge and served chilled, in small glasses, since it is quit sweet. It was offered to women guests when they came over to visit during the communist regime,while to the men we offered raki. At that time there were few choices of drinks and food and people had to get creative with what they had in hand.

This liquor is a great way to use leftover wine or a wine you don’t like very much, since the cloves and sugar change the taste. It makes also a great edible gift along with some homemade cookies.

Apple Smoothie

If you’re looking for something sweet, fresh, healthy and super delicious and that is ready in the blink of an eye this smoothie is the answer.
I usually have it for breakfast before my long runs or rides. It gives me lots of energy, keeps me full for hours and at the same time is very light.

All you have to do is peel and cut the apple and put it in the blender. Add oatmeal for fibres, raisins as a natural sweetener, milk, yogurt and peanut butter for fat, proteins and carbohydrates. Don’t forget a pinch of salt to boost all flavours.

Blend for a minute or two, sprinkle cinnamon and nutmeg if you like and “voila”!

Homemade oat milk

Oatmeal milkIf you’re a oatmeal lover like me you should definitely try oat milk. You’ll love it. The recipe is super simple, while the result is just wow. All you need to have is a blender, a fine sieve, and a large bowl.

The oat milk is sweet, grainy, and a little grassy the way a bowl of oatmeal would taste. I use it in coffee, smoothies, to make hot cocoa, or just warm a little bit add a bit of cinnamon and drink it as it is. I’ve read it may be used like normal milk in baked goods, puddings etc, but haven’t tried it yet.

Peach and turmeric smoothie – the perfect summer drink

IMG_1501 (2)You know, how early summer mornings change from “meh”, to “wow”? By enjoying this fresh peach and turmeric summer smoothie, where peach is the star ingredient. Make sure to choose fresh and juicy peaches and get ready for a burst of flavours.

Apart from peaches, I added banana for sweetness and texture, oatmeal for fibres, chia for good fat and a pinch of turmeric for its anti-inflammatory effects. It is ready on few minutes and will keep you full till lunch. I find it just sweet enough and totally peach-y, but if you prefer it more sweet, add a little bit of honey or maple syrup.

As every smoothie will take maximum 5 minutes of your day J enjoy it for breakfast or as an afternoon snack.

I enjoyed one after a 20k run and I was super fresh and full of energy after drinking it.

Go green smoothieThe marathon day comes closer and closer and the training gets harder and harder. So, I’m always looking for mental and physical power boosters. Sometimes it’s a good book, listening to rock legends, or just cuddling with my cats, or the three of them at the same time. And then, there are smoothies, so many smoothies, which help me fuel with vitamins and minerals that I loose during training. My current smoothie obsession is this beauty
It is a combo of spinach, kiwis, oranges, banana and lemon. I like it a bit sour, but if you don’t, just omit the lemon and if you still want it sweeter add a little bit of honey or some dates while blending. As always add some seeds for proteins, fats and extra flavour.
